I moved to Uruguay with over 1,000 days on Duolingo. I genuinely thought I was prepared. I wasn't. Duolingo teaches you to match pictures to words — it never once made me actually speak to another person. The moment I arrived and needed to order food, ask for directions, or talk to my neighbours, I was lost. All that time, and I couldn't hold a basic conversation.
Duolingo teaches you to match pictures to words. Real life asks you to negotiate, make small talk, understand thick accents, and recover when you say something wrong. There's a massive gap between app learning and actual fluency — and no one was bridging it.
Apps like Pingo AI are genuinely good at AI conversation practice — and Hello Charla does that too. But they stop there. When you're actually standing in front of someone and your mind goes blank, no pre-built scenario saves you. I needed something that worked in the moment — live translation when I was lost, a way to record what happened and actually learn from it after. That full loop — practice with AI, use it in real life, record it, review it — is what no other app does. That's what I built.
